On Solutions for Frustrated Voters
Who hasn't griped and complained about the federal government?
Many vent by yelling at the television or expressing disgust to a friend or loved one. Others cuss incessantly when paying taxes. Most of us have thought about a variety of different solutions, some legal -- and others illegal (j/k, of course).
Below I start a list of possible solutions to help improve how our leaders govern. This list will grow and change over time, so please provide feedback and while you are at it, offer one or two suggestions of your own.
** Too many senior government officials, who when they leave office, take high paying jobs as lobbyists or other government-centered advisors, consultants, and salesmen. These public servants should not be parlaying their government work into sweetheart deals with companies looking to capitalize on their public service employment. Therefore, I propose we place a more significant and expansive lobbying ban on senior government officials, to include elected representatives, senior civilian employees, and military flag officers.
** Washington D.C. has become too big, too expensive, and too disconnected from the rest of the nation. Therefore, I propose we assess which departments, agencies, and other entities have a critical requirement to remain in D.C. If not critical, we begin a process of relocating them to communities throughout the U.S. For instance, the Department of Agriculture could move to Springfield, IL; the Department of Commerce to Omaha, NE; the Department of Housing and Urban Development to Augusta, GA; the Department of Health and Human Services to Spokane, WA.
** We elect Presidents not just because of the policy positions they hold, but also for their judgment in selecting the right people for important positions. Therefore, how feasible would it be to propose that Presidential nominees must select individuals for primary cabinet holders no later than 15 days after their nominating convention?
